How to Choose The Right Bathtub
Whether you’re upgrading your current bathtub or designing a new bathroom from scratch, ascertaining a few key specs from your space are critical before you pick out your future bathtub. From determining your installation options to ensuring you choose the right material, here are the things you need to consider when choosing the right bathtub size for your space.
CHOOSE A BATHTUB SIZE
Jacuzzi® Bathtubs are identified by length, width, and height, but as you contemplate your choices, consider who will be using the tub. If your bathtub will be primarily utilized by children, look for a model with low sides that will make it safe to enter and exit the tub, as well as easy for parents to reach in and help bathe the kids.
If your bathtub needs to accommodate multiple people, look for a model that can comfortably seat two and features a center drain. A particularly tall person may want to consider a 6-foot bathtub to ensure comfort and plenty of space while bathing. If you’re a solo bather, a bathtub with a high back, like the Era™ Slipper bathtub, is great for reclining and letting your worries fade away.
For remodels, be sure to make note of the location of the drain–whether left, right, or center–on the bathtub you are intending to replace to ensure the model you choose will be able to align with your drain.

DETERMINE A BATHTUB INSTALLATION TYPE
Before you choose a style of bathtub for your dream bathroom, you first need to determine which installation type will work in your intended space. Freestanding, drop-in, undermount, alcove, or skirted, the installation type often is determined not only by your style preference, but also by the space you have for your future bathtub.
Not sure which style will work for you? If you’re upgrading, take a photo of your existing space and allow a Jacuzzi® bath expert to help you determine which models you can consider.

SELECT YOUR BATHTUB EXPERIENCE
What type of experience do you want to have when you relax in your bathtub? Jacuzzi offers a number of options for you to select from.
For the ultimate in relaxation, look into a Salon® Spa bathtub. This tub combines powerful jets and air bubbles to soothe your body and relax tired, tight muscles. Choose the Whirlpool for a hydromassage session—the massage these jets provide is one of the best things you can do for your body.
Another option is the Pure Air® Bath, which provides a gentle, soothing massage via warm air in hundreds of bubbles. This bathtub features 360-degree air inlets, giving you a full-body experience. Lastly, the Soaking bathtub is the perfect antidote to a long, busy day. Stretch out and take advantage of its ergonomic design. This bathtub allows a quiet, calm soak, so make sure you bring your favorite book in with you.
UNDERSTAND YOUR FAUCET OPTIONS
If you’re on the market for a new bathtub, remember to consider your faucet choices. This can have a big influence on what type and size of bathtub will fit best in your space.
A floor-mounted faucet will add a unique touch, but you’ll need more room around the bathtub to install one, so take careful measurements. A wall-mounted faucet contributes to a sleek, modern look, and produces a longer water arch. This setup also leaves your bathtub with more surface space. On the other hand, should you have limited space around your tub, choosing to mount a faucet on the deck area may be your best option, as well as a more economical choice.
Helpful Information
Generally, the size of the bathing area in the bathroom will determine whether a 5-foot, 6-foot or corner bath is selected. If space is not an issue then other factors can be considered. Most consumers’ compare the features, performance, style, comfort and price of the various baths being evaluated.
When looking at a whirlpool bath you must establish the reference point, which is the suction cover. When standing directly in front of the bath the suction cover should be right beneath you. (The Fresco™ and Mito™ are exceptions to this rule. For these two units the suction cover will be across from you.) Having located the suction cover:
- On an end-drain bath, the right hand or left hand designation refers to the location of the drain.
- On an end-drain bath, the pump and motor location will be at the opposite end from the drain.
- On a center-drain bath, the right hand or left hand designation refers to the pump and motor location.
- An Authorized Jacuzzi Bath Dealer or Distributor can provide you with additional information for your particular application.
A general rule of thumb is that the water heater should be two-thirds the size of the water capacity of the bath. For example, a 60-gallon bath would require a 40-gallon water heater. This rough formula does not take into consideration other demands that might be placed on the water heater. We recommend that a plumber be consulted for your particular application.
