How to choose the right hot tub for me
13 Minute Read
A hot tub is an investment that can bring you, your family, and your friends years of enjoyment and entertainment for many years to come. However, there are a lot of things to consider when searching for the right hot tub for you. When making a large investment such as a hot tub, you want to be sure you make the right decision. Before buying a hot tub, you should be equipped with a list of things that are most important to you. Read on to discover a list of common questions that can help you figure out your list of priorities to ensure you choose the right hot tub for you.
Who will be using the hot tub?
When considering a hot tub, you’ll want to make sure you purchase one that will suit your needs and accommodate your family and guests. If you have a large family or enjoy entertaining, you may want to consider a larger hot tub that can accommodate more people. Open seating is also more ideal for socializing in the hot tub.
On the other hand, if you have small children, you may want a hot tub with a “cool down seat.” Rather than deep seating, a cool down seat is higher up in the hot tub so small children are more elevated out of the water. If you’re purchasing a hot tub for yourself or for you and a partner, a smaller hot tub will likely suffice and you can opt for a lounger, which provides a more full-body hydrotherapy experience. Lounge seating does takes up more space than open seating, which is important to consider also.
How many people will use the hot tub?
Next, take into consideration the number of people enjoying the hot tub at any given time. For personal use or couples time, a smaller hot tub can provide just the right amount of space and will take up less of a footprint in your backyard or on your patio. If you love the idea of sharing the hot tub experience with family and friends, a larger one can accommodate that need while creating lasting memories. It’s also important to note that water care comes into play based on the size of your spa. Smaller spas have less water, making it a little easier when it comes time to change the water. However, they can require a little more maintenance on a day-to-day basis when it comes to water balancing because the number of gallons per user is lower. It’s also worth noting that the price difference between a 4 person and a 5 person spa will typically not increase the price 25 percent even through the seating capacity is 25 percent higher. So, when it doubt, it might be worth it to size up.
Where will I place my hot tub?
Another important question to ask yourself when choosing the right hot tub for you is where you will place it. This will determine how much space you have so you can decide if a small or larger hot tub will work best.
What shape hot tub is right for me?
You will also want to consider shape. Hot tubs can be square, rectangular, and even triangular, the latter of which can be ideal for more intimate spaces or corners.
What features do I want included with my hot tub?
This is where the fun really begins. The features and amenities of a hot tub can take your hydrotherapy experience to the next level. If massage therapy is an important part of your hot tub experience, you’ll want to ensure your hot tub has powerful and varied massage jets. All jets are not created equal and in fact premium brands generally have specialty jets that increase the level of hydrotherapy. First time spa owners may overlook the importance of jets, which can elevate the hot tub experience. The jets in spas available at big box stores cannot compare to the jets that are found in premium spas like Jacuzzi® hot tubs. You may also want to consider a lounger seat for more full-body hydrotherapy. From there, other options and features can include stereo and speakers, interior and exterior lighting, easy-to-use controls, headrests, cupholders, waterfalls and water features, and more.
Do I have high local electrical rates?
If you live in an area where electrical rates are high, this is an important element to consider. If your energy consumption rates are high, it’s even more vital to look for well-insulated spas that meet or exceed California Energy Commission standards, smaller spas that don’t require as much energy, or hot tubs that can be equipped with energy-saving systems, such as the Jacuzzi® SmartTub® remote monitoring system with an app that allows you to control your spa as well as monitor and manage electricity usage.
What is my budget?
Budget will likely be a factor when you are determining how to choose the right hot tub for you. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that the least expensive hot tub model might not necessarily be the cheapest choice after all. A lesser quality spa with poor insulation may end up costing you more in maintenance costs as well as higher energy bills in the long run. Quality brands typically offer more affordable models that don’t sacrifice quality or insulation in exchange for a lower price. They may not include all the features of a more premium model; however, the bones of the spa itself will still be high quality.
When you are shopping for a hot tub and wondering how to choose the right hot tub for you, answering these questions can help you get a better feel for your needs. Ultimately, the right hot tub for you is the one that suits your desires so you can enjoy and benefit from it for years ahead.
