Nanotechnology in hot tubs: Using technology to enhance your hydrotherapy

10 Minute Read

Nanotechnology is the latest advancement in hot tub water care. While it sounds like something out of a sci-fi film, nanotechnology is really quite simple and gentle.

This article will help you understand what nanotechnology is and how it is used in hot tubs. It will also explain how the Jacuzzi® brand is using this technology to make hot tub care easier than ever before through its newest innovation—Jacuzzi® True Water™.

True Water alleviates the hassle and stress of hot tub maintenance and greatly minimizes the amount of chemicals required to clean1.

Article highlights:

  • Definition and explanation of nanotechnology
  • Explanation of nanobubbles and how the Jacuzzi brand is using them to elevate hot tub water care
  • Introduction to Jacuzzi® True Water
  • Tips for further enjoying your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub with True Water

What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology comes down to size. According to the International Institute for Nanotechnology at Northwestern University, “The prefix ‘nano’ comes from the Greek word for ‘dwarf’ and simply means one billionth.”

At the nanoscale, the properties of materials change based on their size, shape, and composition. This process does not occur in this way at any other length scale.

“It’s important to note that nanotechnology is not a product like a microchip or an automobile. It is a process that harnesses the unique properties of materials at the 1-100 nanometer scale to develop new materials and devices.”

While nanometer-sized materials have always existed, the article on the International Institute for Nanotechnology explains it wasn’t until 1981 that, “the first scanning tunneling microscope was invented that allowed scientists to not only see nanoscale objects, but to manipulate them in order to harness their unique size-, shape-, and composition-dependent qualities.”

This microscope as well as subsequent inventions and instruments have since enabled the field of nanotechnology, which is focused on the changing properties of nanoscale materials to create solutions to the challenges society faces today.

How is nanotechnology used?

According to the National Nanotechnology Initiative, “Nanotechnology is helping to considerably improve, even revolutionize, many technology and industry sectors: information technology, homeland security, medicine, transportation, energy, food safety, and environmental science, among many others.”

One important way that nanotechnology is being used in the world of hot tubs is through the implementation of nanobubbles to ease and simplify hot tub water care.

What are nanobubbles?

According to Moleaer, a leader in the study of nanobubble fundamentals and applications with the largest research and development team dedicated to nanobubble research, “Due to their size and structure, nanobubbles possess distinct properties that make them particularly effective at improving water quality, enhancing water treatment processes, and improving productivity in industrial and agricultural applications.” Information on the company’s website further explains nanobubbles by defining their characteristics in the following ways:

  • Nanobubbles have strong surface charge that enables them to uniquely stimulate microbiology, making aeration processes more efficient.
  • Nanobubbles are approximately 2,500 times smaller than a grain of salt, less than 200 nanometers (nm) in diameter.
  • Nanobubbles are neutrally buoyant and can remain suspended in liquid, most commonly water, for months without rising to the surface and off-gassing.
  • Nanobubbles’ strong negative surface charge prevents them from coalescing and enables them to physically separate small particles and droplets—like emulsified fats, oils, and grease—from water.
  • Nanobubbles can effectively lift organic and inorganic materials off surfaces.

Nanobubbles are used in the all-new Jacuzzi® True Water, the next generation of water care that only requires about 15 minutes a month of maintenance and almost no chemicals.

What is Jacuzzi® True Water?

True Water is the Jacuzzi® brand’s answer to hassle or stress associated with hot tub water care. The newest innovation in water purification, True Water uses trillions of nanobubbles to clean1 your hot tub water without the use of traditional water care additives, such as bromine. Nearly all the chlorine is removed, too—True Water is 99.9999% chlorine free, which is even less than drinking water2. So your hot tub water will be bright, clear, and sparkling. It will also smell fresh and feel good during and after your soak.

Because True Water is very limited on chemical additions, it is gentle on your skin and hair. One of the most enjoyable parts of a water purification system that requires very little chemicals is the result it has on your skin and hair. This is particularly important for those who are sensitive or allergic to chlorine. But with True Water, you can feel the difference. After a soak in your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub with True Water, you might notice the absence of the typical drying feeling on your skin and hair that is associate with chlorine. There is also no heavy chlorine odor with True Water. So your sensory hydrotherapy experience is even further elevated for all your senses.

True Water features trillions of nanoscopic bubbles that are suspended throughout your hot tub water. They are invisible to the naked eye, yet can be seen under a green laser light. Though you may not be able to see them hard at work, they saturate the water, scrub surfaces, and destroy microscopic contaminants that they encounter, even in the pipes and other places in your hot tub that you don’t see.

Nanobubbles have been observed to last up to three months suspended in liquid as they actively work to clean1 your hot tub water. True Water has been third-party lab tested, and results show that this water purification system removes 99.9% of bacterial and viral contaminants without added chlorine or other chemical additivies3.

With True Water, you can have clean1 water with little effort or stress. So, you can focus more on the enjoyment of your hot tub, and less on the maintenance of it. After all, you got a hot tub for your own relaxation; it shouldn’t be the source of stress or hassle. With True Water, you can care for your hot tub water in as little as 15 minutes per month, and daily maintenance is not required. So relax, you are in good hands with Jacuzzi® True Water.

Thanks to the great reduction of required chemicals and the minimal time required to maintain your hot tub water, True Water is truly the future of hot tub water care. Jacuzzi® True Water comes standard on models in the Jacuzzi® J-LX® Collection and Jacuzzi® J-400™ Collection. It will also soon be available as an optional upgrade on hot tub models in the Jacuzzi® J-300 Collection.
