DIY Fall Air Fresheners
Spring isn’t the only season that is known for its scents; autumn offers powerful aromas that evoke feelings of nostalgia, anticipation of the holidays and remind you that the seasons are changing. From apples to cinnamon and more, here are DIY natural air fresheners that bring the scents of fall into your home.
Homemade stovetop scents
Go beyond traditional potpourri and send the scents of the season wafting through your home from the warmth of your stovetop. Simply fill a medium-sized pot with water, add in herbs, fruit peels, extract, and spices, bring water to a boil, and simmer over low heat.
Pro tip: You can use a slow cooker set on low to fill your home with homemade air fresheners, too, for a set-it-and-forget-it option
Just frequently replenish your simmer pot with water every 30 minutes and keep it on the back burner. And, you can even store in an air-tight container in the fridge and use it for a second day. Try some of these autumn-inspired potpourri combinations:
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup dried mint leaves
- ¾ pot of water
- ½ apple, sliced into circles
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ¾ pot of water
- The peel of two oranges
- ¼ cup sliced fresh ginger
- ¾ pot of water
- 1 tsp Allspice
- 1 tsp maple extract
- ½ tsp honey
- ¾ pot of water
DIY Cinnamon Scented Pine Cones
Whether piled high in a basket by your front door or adorning your mantle in a glass jar, scented pine cones offer the look and smells of fall. For those who want to make your own, collect fallen pine cones, wash, bake and scent for an infusion of autumn in your home. Here’s how.
Collect fallen pinecones and wash in a basin of warm water and dishwashing soap. Rinse thoroughly. Spread pinecones on foil-lined baking sheet and bake at 200-degrees for 45 minutes. You may need to turn them over and continue baking in 15 minute increments until they open. Add 20 drops of cinnamon essential oil to ½ cup of warm water to spray bottle and shake to mix. Spray warm pinecones lightly with cinnamon water and seal in zipper close bag or airtight container for at least 24 hours to let the scent fully infuse into the pinecones.
Pro-tip: the longer you leave the pinecones sealed after scenting, the more intense the scent will be. Consider storing up to a week for maximum strength.
