5 Tips for Getting Your Backyard Summer-Ready

5 Tips for Getting Your Backyard Summer-Ready

After the ravages of winter, your backyard will need some TLC to bring it back to its former glory. This spring, put in the required effort to spruce up your outdoor space. Before you know it, you’ll be ready for the lazy days and relaxing nights that make summer such a delight.

Here are five tips for making your backyard summer-ready.

#1: Wash away dirt and grime. Now that you’ve ventured outdoors, you may be surprised to see how much dirt has accumulated on outdoor surfaces such as your deck and patio. One of the most effective ways to clean these surfaces is to use a pressure washer with an appropriate detergent. Be sure to follow directions so as not to damage surfaces such as wooden deck boards. Your spa skirt, also known as a hot tub cabinet, is made from sturdy, UV-resistant materials that shouldn’t require much attention. But, should it need a little refresh, simply spray the exterior with a garden hose and nozzle attachment or wipe it down with a cloth and mild soap-and-water-solution.

#2: Bring your lawn back to life. Everybody loves a green, lush lawn, but it’s not always easy to achieve. You may want to turn the duties over to a professional lawn service, or you can follow these do-it-yourself lawn care steps:

  • Rake the lawn in the early spring to remove any lingering dead grass or leaves.
  • Aerate the soil to aid absorption of water and nutrients.
  • Weed and feed to keep down weeds and fertilize your grass, but don’t overdo it or the herbicides could stunt new grass growth.
  • When mowing, be careful not to cut the grass too short or it will be more susceptible to sun damage.
  • Give your lawn two or three deep waterings each week. Water your lawn in the early to mid-morning—not the evening. The air is cooler, but you won’t have the problem of water remaining overnight and promoting fungal growth.

#3: Landscape like a pro. What sets an ordinary backyard from a backyard showcase is how well you landscape. The best landscaping designs typically feature a variety of heights, shapes, colors, and textures. Peruse garden magazines for looks you love, or if you feel uncertain about your own design expertise, seek advice from your local garden centers or landscaping professionals. #4: Let there be light. Some of the best backyard entertaining often happens after the sun goes down, which is why you’ll want to “highlight” this task. Use path lights and well lights along walkway and landscaped areas. For patios and deck areas, overhead string lighting or lanterns are excellent options. Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces provide illumination and also add a nice ambience.

#5: Focus on amenities. The best way to enjoy your backyard is to provide great amenities for relaxation and socialization, like with a Jacuzzi® hot tub. Make the area around your hot tub conducive to conversation with comfortable places to sit. Consider adding shade with an umbrella if natural shields from the sun are scarce. Summertime is also backyard grilling time, so make sure your grill is in tip-top shape for your upcoming get-togethers with family and friends.

Being able to enjoy your backyard is one of the greatest gifts summer can bring, so it is definitely worth the effort to make it look its best. Visit the Jacuzzi® inspiration gallery for ideas to get your backyard summer ready.
