Before you choose a hot tub that meets your needs, you have to decide where to put it. To give your spa a solid start, work from the bottom up and start with a proper foundation.

What makes a suitable base for your new hot tub? An existing surface can work if it fits a few simple criteria:

A Level Concrete Surface

First, it must be level. So long as it is flat and without grade, it will likely work for your new portable hot tub. Although a slab made of multiple blocks is acceptable, a single slab is preferred because it is more durable. Usually a concrete slab made to building code is suitable to hold a hot tub. However, many patios and other concrete slabs are pitched for drainage, which may make an unsuitable base for your hot tub.

Hot Tub Slab is in Good Condition

Second, your existing concrete slab must be in good condition. Visually inspect it for large cracks and uneven surfaces. Should it appear it can hold its own for years to come, you likely have a good hot tub foundation.

Proper the Hot Tub Foundation Placement

In addition, the base should be in close proximity to the home breaker panel, which will be the hot tub’s power supply, and within reach of a spigot or hose so you can fill it with water.

Large Enough Size to Fit Your Spa Dimensions

Finally, the slab must be large enough that the hot tub can sit on it properly. Ideally, the slab will be somewhat larger than the spa so there’s room to walk around the hot tub or to install steps.

If your existing slab fits the bill, you’re ready to install, fill up, and enjoy. Or, you’re your local hot tub dealer is happy to provide an on-site inspection or discuss alternative spa bases, from pouring a new hot tub slab to using pavers or spa pads.
