HOT TUB LINGO 101: UNDERSTANDING HOT TUB ERROR CODES

3 Minute Read

Do you speak hot tub? While it is a good idea to keep your hot tub manual handy, here are a number of must-know error codes and their follow-up actions that will keep you and your fellow soakers safe. Many error codes are related to malfunctions in the temp sensor, which can indicate issues such as sensor failures or temperature limits being exceeded. The power supply is crucial for running various sensors and functionalities, ensuring your hot tub operates smoothly. Additionally, the panel and circuit board play a significant role in troubleshooting and error codes, as issues with these components can affect system operation.

Introduction to Hot Tubs

Hot tubs are a great way to relax and unwind, providing a soothing and calming experience. However, like any other complex system, hot tubs can sometimes display error codes that indicate a problem. Understanding these error codes is crucial for maintaining the safety and proper functioning of the hot tub. In this section, we will introduce the concept of hot tub error codes and their importance in ensuring a safe and enjoyable hot tub experience.

Hot Tub Error Identification

Hot tub error codes can be specific to the hot tub brand. These codes can indicate a range of issues, from temperature sensor problems to pressure switch failures. It’s essential to identify the error code and understand its meaning to take corrective action. Some common hot tub error codes include OH (overheat), FL (flow or pressure switch malfunction), and SN (non-functional high temperature sensor). By recognizing these codes, hot tub owners can diagnose and troubleshoot issues quickly, ensuring their hot tub remains safe and functional.

COL/COOL

Hot tubs are meant to be hot. This error code means yours is not. It pops up whenever there is a steep drop from the set temperature, such as when you fill/refill your spa. No need to call a tech—just let the heater do its job and the water will reach its set temperature. The heater activates to raise the water temperature, so no need to call a tech in for this, either. Eventually, the water will return to its normal winterized temperature.

blb/BLB

If you see some variation of the letters BLB flashing across your control panel, it means that the UV bulb needs to be replaced. You can purchase one from your local Jacuzzi® dealer.

Sn1/Sn2

This indicates that there is an open or shorted sensor, which means your heater is disabled and/or your hot tub has deactivated. Specific error codes like 'Sn3' for temp sensor malfunction and 'SnA' for temp sensor malfunction in jack A can help diagnose these issues. Additionally, failures in the hi limit sensor can indicate overheating or other sensor malfunctions. It is not a good idea to use your hot tub when the sensors are malfunctioning, so call your friendly spa tech for assistance.

FL1/FL2

This code means any of the following: the flow switch is malfunctioning open (FL1) or closed (FL2), there is a shorted flow switch, the filter cartridge needs to be changed or cleaned, or there is an “air lock” condition at the circulation pump intake. A clogged filter can also cause water flow problems. The hot tub heater and jets pump will likely deactivate, so now is a great time to call a hot tub technician

The above error codes do not indicate immediate danger to the user, but the following codes do:

I

This error code stands for overheat, often caused by a tripped high limit switch due to excessive water temperature. As a measure to prevent freezing, the system includes freeze protection, ensuring no further action is necessary when the alarm is triggered. You can call a tech for assistance, but here is a home remedy you might want to try first: Take the spa cover off and let the water cool down. Program the filter for Economy mode, and cancel the Summer Logic condition, which occurs when the actual water temperature goes above the set temperature. If this does not restore the water to a safe temperature, secure the cover on the hot tub and call your tech.

Troubleshooting and Repair

Troubleshooting and repairing hot tub errors require a systematic approach. First, it’s essential to consult the hot tub manual or online resources to understand the error code and its possible causes. Next, users should check the electrical system, plumbing, and heating components for any issues, such as loose connections, faulty wiring, or clogged filters. In some cases, error codes may indicate a problem with the temperature sensors, pressure switch, or flow switch, which can be resolved by cleaning or replacing the affected component. If the issue persists, it’s recommended to seek assistance from a professional hot tub technician. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the filter cartridge and checking the pressure switch, can also help prevent issues and ensure the hot tub runs smoothly.

Preventing Issues in Hot Tubs

Preventing issues in hot tubs requires regular maintenance and upkeep. This includes checking the water temperature, ensuring proper circulation, and monitoring the pressure switch and flow switch. It’s also essential to clean the filter cartridge regularly and inspect the hot tub’s electrical and plumbing systems for any signs of wear or damage. Additionally, hot tub owners should be aware of potential issues, such as persistent low flow problems, clogged filters, or non-functional temperature sensors, and take corrective action promptly. By following these tips and staying informed about hot tub error codes, owners can enjoy a safe and relaxing hot tub experience while minimizing the risk of errors and downtime. Regular checks of the control panel, circuit board, and heater hardware can also help identify potential issues before they become major problems, ensuring the hot tub remains a haven for relaxation and recreation.

If you see dashes on your hot tub control panel, do not attempt to use your spa. This means that the water is dangerously hot and may trigger a high temperature alarm loc, indicating the panel or keypad is locked due to high temperature conditions. Call a hot tub service tech right away and be sure to secure the cover on your hot tub so that no one else attempts to use it. Your scalding hot tub will likely trigger the Watchdog software, which will deactivate the spa and flash red safety lights as a warning.

Now that you are in the know when it comes to error codes, you can relax and enjoy your hot tub safely. Stay on top of hot tub maintenance by getting to know the manual and user guide for your spa.
