3 Ways to Convert Your Backyard for Winter Enjoyment

Winter is almost here, which means it’s time to start updating your yard before the weather gets too cold. Don’t just duck indoors when the skies become gray; instead, make some adjustments to your outdoor space to ensure it’s enjoyable in the coming months. To maximize your outdoor experience, here are three ways to convert your backyard for winter enjoyment:

Improve Lighting and Safety

Nothing is quite as effective at creating an attractive environment as lighting, especially in snow-covered yards. Hang strings of colored lights from your trees or place ground lights amidst your flora and fauna. A brighter yard is also much safer to navigate as it starts to get darker, earlier. Mix different types of lights—like lanterns, well lights, and deck lights—to create the type of mood you prefer. Spotlight particular structures, such as your gazebo or hot tub, or create well-lit paths around your yard.

Generate Ambiance

Even if you won’t be spending as much time in your backyard as you do in the warmer months, you can still create ambiance and a enjoy a beautiful setting when bundled up. For yards without a fence, protect your family’s privacy while adding an appealing enclosure to your home. You can choose fencing with a staggered topline or ornamental shapes, or perhaps look into stone or brick fencing to give your backyard a snug, sheltered feel. You may also wish to set up outdoor privacy screens. These come in a variety of types and finishes, including real and faux wood, and provide both a sense of seclusion and comfort. Additionally, adding some weatherproofed furniture to your backyard will tempt family and friends into the great outdoors on the milder winter days.

Create Warmth

Purchase deck heaters or a fire pit to bring warmth to the cold winter months. In particular, freestanding heaters or smaller units are ideal because you can move them around at will. You can also consider investing in a hot tub. Not only will a hot tub help you warm up and relax in the winter, but it also provides hydromassage, something you may come to appreciate if your joints and muscles tend to ache or get tense in the cooler weather. A hot tub is an attractive focal point for your backyard, offers therapeutic benefits, and provides a gathering place for family and friends to spend time together. Whether getting out of a spa or heading to sit by the fire pit, placing a chest near the back door to hold towels, blankets, and coats will keep you warm and dry.

Winter does not mean your outdoor entertaining needs to stop. Reclaim your space and enjoy your backyard no matter what the temperature. With proper care, you’ll have a wonderful place to relax after a long day at work.

3 Entertaining Games to Play in Your Hot Tub

You already know how relaxing your spa is, but you might not realize just how much enjoyable it can be too. Unlike pools, most people don’t associate hot tubs with games even though there are quite a few you can play. Here are three games to try out with your friends and family this weekend:

Musical Jets

Musical jets is just like musical chairs with the added twist of involving your hot tub. Start by shutting down a portion of the jets in your spa. Have someone play a song (for example via the Bluetooth enabled Jacuzzi® Hot Tub) while everyone in the spa moves around in a clockwise motion. Just like musical chairs, when that person stops the music, everyone has to stop where they’re at. Unlike musical chairs however, where you’re scattering to find a chair, in musical jets you’re trying to sit down in front of a jet. If there isn’t a jet blowing up against you when you freeze, you’re out and have to leave the hot tub while everyone else finishes the game.

The Mine Game

Turn off the jets in your hot tub and drop in five to 10 ping pong balls, rubber ducks, or some other type of small, floating toys. The objective of the game is not to touch the floating objects; you can scramble out of the way as much as you can, but your feet must remain in the tub.

If you come into contact with an object, you have to leave the tub and place two more objects inside. After a few minutes, whoever has survived the onslaught of small toys is the victor.

Hot Tub Hockey

Using a ping pong ball or something else that floats, hot tub hockey involves trying to move this object to your opponent’s side of the spa without using your hands. Start off by placing the ping pong ball in the middle of the tub, between you (your team) and your opponent. Each time your team manages to move the ball to the opposing team’s wall, you earn a point. Splashing is allowed and can be a great way to heat up the competition! The team that scores three points first is the winner.

Most Popular Backyard Additions to Complement Your Hot Tub

As a hot tub owner, your backyard is probably already your go-to relaxation spot. But what if you want to take it further than just soaking in your spa? Here are four outdoor additions to complement your hot tub and backyard:

Add More Water
Create your own oasis by installing a waterfall. Used in places known for serenity, like massage therapy rooms, the sound of a waterfall is synonymous with relaxation. Ponds, which can include waterfalls, koi fish, or other additions, can also make your backyard more attractive and inviting.

Incorporate Fire

Similar to a bonfire on the beach, a fire pit can give your backyard a sense of nostalgia that can be very soothing after a long day. Whether you build a permanent outdoor fireplace or purchase a portable version, make sure to check your local ordinances before you invest as some cities limit the size and use of fire pits. Tiki torches are also a nice way to give your backyard that resort feel, as well as helping keep the bugs away.

Create a Yoga or Relaxation Area
Similar to the way your hot tub provides a variety of hydrotherapy benefits for your entire back, yoga is a great way to relax and relieve your spine of the compression it endures each day. Create a dedicated outdoor space for yoga, meditation, and other relaxation methods to give you and your family members a place to unwind each day.

Build an Outdoor Bar
Whether you’re enjoying a glass of wine with your partner or entertaining friends, an outdoor bar can make your backyard a more welcoming environment. Rather than disrupting conversation to trek back and forth from the kitchen, this outdoor addition provides that added convenience of having a fully stocked bar and glassware on hand, making entertaining more enjoyable and less stressful.

Putting Your Green Thumb to Good Use

Whether you’re an award-winning orchid grower or you’re a novice gardener who can’t remember the difference between perennials and annuals, it’s easy to create an inviting backyard space with plants. From designing natural privacy to adding some vibrant colors, there are several foolproof ways of transforming your hot tub area into a garden oasis with or without a green thumb.

The Ultimate Hot Tub Party Checklist

During your first 100 days as a Jacuzzi® brand hot tub owner, use your next party as an opportunity show off your new investment AND impress friends and family with your hospitality as a host. You don’t want to throw one of those parties where it seems like the host hasn’t taken the necessary prep time for food, drinks, music and activities. Hot tubs were built for entertaining, so follow this foolproof checklist for hosting the ultimate hot tub party.

✓ GEAR FOR GUESTS

EXTRA BATHING SUITS: Keep extra bathing suits, swim trunks or old t-shirts as backup for guests who forget their bathing gear at home. Even if some guests “forget” their bathing suits as an excuse to not get in the hot tub, once they see how much fun everyone’s having, they’ll want to jump in too.

TOWELS: You can never have too many towels on hand, especially when you consider that guests will get in and out of the hot tub multiple times. Keep a rotation of dry towels going so that everyone stays comfortable. Your guests (as well as your floors and furniture) will thank you for it!

✓ THINGS TO DO

GAMES: Most of the action will be centered on your hot tub, so make sure your guests stay entertained with games that can get wet. Waterproof playing cards, floating game boards and checkers sets are always good bets, as are group games like charades.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: Although it’s a hot tub party, not everyone will be in the tub at the same time. Make sure all of your guests are comfortable and entertained (not just the ones in the tub) by providing ample seating around the tub and a variety of outdoor games.

✓ REFRESHMENTS

DRINKS: Stock up on a variety of ice cold drinks that will keep everyone refreshed. It’s a good idea to provide your guests with either cans or plastic cups to avoid any broken glass around the hot tub area. Make sure everyone stays hydrated and safe in a party atmosphere by keeping plenty of chilled water available.

FOOD: Remember to keep food light, as most guests won’t want to be walking around in their swimsuits with a belly full of food. When you factor in a raised body temperature from the hot tub, being too full can be a recipe for discomfort. To avoid soggy crumbs, stick to serving finger foods that are easy to eat like veggies and dip, cheese plates, chicken kabobs, egg rolls and popsicles, to name a few.

✓ SET THE MOOD

MUSIC: Every great party needs a great soundtrack. Crowd-pleasing music is a must, so try an oldies playlist to keep everyone happy. Many Jacuzzi® hot tub models come with built in iPod docking stations that make it easy to keep the music going without getting in and out of the tub.

LIGHTING: It’s amazing how much ambiance some soft lighting can provide, so try adding candles, lanterns or twinkling lights to your hot tub area. Many Jacuzzi® hot tubs offer LED Chromatherapy options, enabling you to select color and brightness to create the perfect atmosphere for you and your guests.

Remember, if the host isn’t having fun, the guests won’t either. Making these necessary preparations beforehand will ultimately allow you to sit back, relax and have a blast from the moment the party starts.
