The History of Hydromassage

The soothing power of water has been appreciated for thousands of years, from the relaxing heat of geothermal springs to the calming sound of a waterfall or bubbling brook. However, it took an innovative family and a challenging health problem to launch the modern hot tub industry.

Hydromassage Pioneers

The Jacuzzi brothers immigrated to California from Italy in the early 1900s and were inventors from the start. Their passion for creation led to their first success: the first enclosed cabin monoplane, which was used by the U.S. postal service. Next came an ingenious water pump that transformed agriculture. Fortune seemed to be smiling on the family. But in the 1940s, debilitating rheumatoid arthritis struck the 15-month-old son of Candido Jacuzzi. Searching for relief for his small son, he redesigned the agricultural pump to work at home in the bathtub. The concept of an at-home spa was novel and extremely popular. A legendary company was born.

Wonderful Whirlpools

That first pump is now known as the Jacuzzi® J-300™ pump, and it was the beginning of a revolution in water therapy. Demand for the pump continued to grow, and in 1956 the Jacuzzi company was officially formed. However, the portable pump was just the beginning. In 1968, Roy Jacuzzi created the first self-contained hydrotherapy tub, and the whirlpool bath business boomed. Incorporating the first-ever built-in jets, “The Roman” personal whirlpool provided an unparalleled experience of relaxation and massage.

A Cultural Phenomenon

The Jacuzzi family had hit on a big idea, and they pushed it even further. With the inclusion of heating and filtration systems and the creation of larger tubs, the Jacuzzi® Hot Tub as we know it today was created. In the 1970s, the first family-sized tub was introduced, and in the ‘80s the hot tub moved outside alongside the pool and patio, becoming a backyard sensation. However, Jacuzzi never forgot its beginnings changing the health of a child.

Latest Innovations

Today, the Jacuzzi® Brand remains at the forefront of hydromassage as a health and wellness benefit. Exclusive PowerPro® jets are designed to swirl and spiral, bubble and more, along with jets for volume and jets for precision. The ergonomically designed RX Jet Lounge Seat delivers a fully adjustable experience, while the PowerPro® Therapy Seat provides personalized massage from head to toe. As research into the benefits of water massage grows, the Jacuzzi® Brand will continue to develop cutting-edge products.

Can a Hot Tub Can Help Detox Your Body for Summer?

With summer right around the corner, now’s an ideal time to start rebooting your body to get rid of the sluggishness of winter. There is nothing more important than eating healthy and exercising, but your hot tub may also be able to help you “detox” and get ready for sunnier days. Here are some tips to get you started with an at-home detox session in your hot tub:

Before You Get In

Exfoliate.

Before stepping inside your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub, take a bath or shower and scrub your skin with a loofa or coarse washcloth. This exfoliation removes dead skin and helps your pores breathe.

During Your Soak

Heat. Sitting in the warm waters of a hot tub, your core temperature will rise and you’ll begin to sweat. This will flush any toxins from your body through your pores.

Hydrate.

It’s important to drink plenty of water while in a hot tub to replenish your body’s fluids as you sweat.

Stretch. Your muscles will loosen and relax as they heat up, making your spa an ideal place to gently stretch any problem areas.

After You Get Out

Cleanse. By taking a quick, cool shower after each session in your hot tub, you can rinse off any impurities that have worked their way to your skin’s surface in the form of sweat.

Engage in a detox session at the beginning of summer, if not a few times a week year-round, to help your body stay healthy and functioning its best.

If you’re curious about other health benefits provided by spas, read more about the seven ailments that Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs can alleviate.

The Seven Ailments that Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs Can Alleviate

Hydrotherapy and hydromassage can be used to relieve the symptoms of a multitude of maladies including stress, arthritis, sleeplessness, fibromyalgia, lower-back pain, post-exercise soreness, and leg cramps/restless legs syndrome.

Here’s a closer look at these afflictions and how Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs can alleviate their harmful effects.

  • STRESS

Stress can originate from any number of life’s facets, including money, work, family, and health. And according to a report by the Mayo Clinic, the long-term activation of the stress-response system can disrupt almost all of your body’s natural processes and put you at increased risk for numerous health problems.1 But just 10 minutes in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub each day can dissolve stress and relieve headaches by increasing blood flow and soothing muscles.

  • ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is a condition that stiffens joints and causes pain for roughly 350 million people on the planet. Heated hydrotherapy, however—such as is offered in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub—has been proven to reduce pain levels in those with arthritis by opening blood vessels, increasing range of movement, and promoting muscle growth.2

  • SLEEPLESSNESS

If you suffer from bouts of sleeplessness, some time in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub can send you to snoozeville in no time at all. According to the Better Sleep Council, immersing your body in warm water helps create healthy sleep habits by relieving tension and stimulating circulation.3 Plus, when your body is cooling down after a hot tub session, your brain receives subconscious messages suggesting that you sleep.

  • FIBROMYALGIA

Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects the entire body in myriad ways. The disorder is often associated with sweeping musculoskeletal discomfort, but can also negatively impact the mood, energy level, and sleep habits of those coping with it. The Mayo Clinic notes that warm water is effective in treating fibromyalgia, due to its ability to foster relaxation and mitigate muscle tension.4

  • LOWER-BACK PAIN

In a 2012 survey conducted by the American Physical Therapy Association, nearly two out of every three Americans admitted to dealing with discomfort in their lower backs at one point or another. With so many individuals afflicted by this pain, it’s no wonder that the “Journal of Musculoskeletal Research” stated that hydrotherapy offers more potential benefits for those with lower-back pain, in comparison to land-based forms of exercise.5

  • POST-EXERCISE SORENESS

Spending time in the gym can work wonders for your body, but sore muscles the day following an intense session can make movement difficult. That’s why Dr. James Andrews, former president of the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, recommends hydrotherapy for every athlete based on its ability to increase blood flow, improve sensory impulses, and assuage stiff joints.6

  • LEG CRAMPS/RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME

Though there remains uncertainty as to the cause behind the unpleasant sensation that millions of people experience in their thighs, calves, and feet, one likely factor is that brain misfires signals to sensory nerves in the lower extremities. Relaxing in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub prior to sleeping can diminish those feelings and while putting your muscles at ease.7

Spending time in your hot tub or bathtub to enjoy hydrotherapy can help ameliorate suffering from these ailments. Consult your physician for the best course of action for your medical condition.

Can a Hot Tub Help Relieve Headaches?

You know that a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub can ease aches and pains in your back, legs, or shoulders. But can a hot tub relieve headaches? The answer is yes. Read on to learn more.

Tackling Tension Headaches

A tension headache, also known as a stress headache, may stem from tight, uncomfortable muscles in the back, which can pull on one another until they cause great pain in your head and neck. To treat your tension headache, climb into your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub and position the jets so they hit pressure points along your back and neck. Since tension headaches often begin with neck and back muscles, helping these muscles relax will ease a tension headache.

Managing Migraine Headaches

For those who wrestle with migraine headaches, finding relief fast is at the top of your list. According to the Mayo Clinic, both stress and changes in sleep habits can contribute to an onset of a migraine, both of which can be addressed by spending time in your hot tub. Although your doctor will determine the best course of action when treating your migraines, the therapeutic benefits of your hot tub not only help you relax and reduce stress, they also remedy sleeplessness, both of which can help curb a menacing migraine.

As long as your doctor gives you the green light, spending time in your hot tub may help relieve your headaches.  Drink plenty of water while enjoying your hot tub, as well as limiting yourself to 20 minutes at a time.

Fast Facts You Didn’t Know About Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs

Whether you already own a hot tub or are considering adding one to your home, there may be a few things you didn’t know about these warm-water retreats. Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs enhance your personal health regimen and certainly liven up your backyard gatherings, but they also have a rich history and interesting role to play in people’s lives. Here are seven interesting fast facts about Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs:

The use of hot tubs extends back thousands of years in human history

In Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Japan, people believed in their positive cleansing and therapeutic effects. The original models were naturally occurring hot springs or baths into which scalding rocks were lowered. Later hot tubs included fire-heated basins, then evolved into the more modern versions that are crafted from wood, cement, stainless steel, acrylic, and plastic.

Jacuzzi® Hot Tub technology originated in the aviation and agricultural industries

The seven Jacuzzi brothers were innovative engineers. After developing the first enclosed-cabin monoplane, they revolutionized the agricultural industry in 1925 by creating the first submersible pump. When a young Jacuzzi family member developed rheumatoid arthritis, the brothers created an aerating submersible pump to provide pain-reveling hydrotherapy treatments in the bathtub.

Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs provide several different types of therapy, aside from hydromassage

Hydromassage is just one of the health benefits you can reap with a home spa. You can also enjoy chromatherapy, using various colors of light to calm and rejuvenate, and reflexology, targeting pressure points on your hands and feet to relieve tension.

Hot tub technology is continually being innovated and improved

Water jets, heating, and circulation features are always getting better, and much more energy efficient and affordable than most people realize. Some models cost only $14 a month in energy costs.

Hot tub cleaning and upkeep is pretty easy and affordable

It doesn’t take daily scrubbing and expensive equipment to keep a hot tub in pristine condition. With a bit of vigilance – regular checks of your water’s chemical balance and filtration – you’ll only need to drain your tub every 3 to 6 months, depending on frequency of use.

A Jacuzzi® Dealership holds a Guinness World Record

The title for the most nationalities in a single hot tub belongs to a spa dealership in Alicante, Spain. In 2012, people from 26 countries squeezed into a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub for a quick five-minute splash to claim the Guinness World Record.

It’s easy to update your hot tub and keep it current

Even if your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub is a few years old, you can easily update it with a variety of accessories, from spa covers, lifts, wind guards, and lighted steps that will lend even greater personalization.

Ideal Hot Tubs and Bathtubs for Older Generations

As you age, you may begin to realize that things don’t quite bend and flex the way they used to. A number of Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs and Bathtubs are fitted with lounges, cool down seats, and handrails to make entering and exiting your hot tub or spa easier on your body. Here, we’ve selected three products that have these features and are ideal for older generations:

Finestra® Bathtub

The Finestra® is a walk-in bathtub with open- and close-door access. This elegant unit also features slip-resistant flooring and a comfortable seating area. As you enter or exit the tub, you can hold onto the grab bar for additional safety. When relaxing in the Finestra® bath, you can operate the jets with an easily accessible push-button system.

Jacuzzi® Hydrotherapy Shower

Experiencing the Jacuzzi® Hydrotherapy Shower is akin to getting a spa-quality massage in shower form. Our engineers consulted with consumers and doctors alike to craft this revolutionary shower, which includes four Jacuzzi® ShowerPro™ jets. These jets provide targeted pressure to your sore spots, whether it’s your neck, back, or other parts of your body. Plus, the shower is equipped with built-in safety features such as a low step, fold-down bench, and sturdy grab bars, which are all beautifully designed and will help prevent accidents.

J-315™ Hot Tub

With low side entry, the J-315™ is easy to climb in and out of for the adult who is still relatively agile. It’s also possible to add a stairs accessory with a handrail for further safety when entering or exiting the hot tub. The numerous jets in the J-315™, among them the PowerPro® BX, provide a pressure-point hydromassage for tired, possibly arthritic limbs. Plus, the control panel features large buttons for ease of use and the hot tub is spacious enough for you to fully recline.

If you’re unsure which model would be right for you, head to your local Jacuzzi® Dealer and bring your swimsuit. You can “wet test” the hot tubs in the showroom to determine which one has the hydrotherapy or ease of access you’re looking for.

Beyond Relaxation: Your Hot Tub’s Best Therapeutic Benefits

Your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub does not just offer you a relaxing place to unwind; you’re making an investment in your health. Soaking in your hot tub provides therapeutic benefits, which can foster mental and physical improvements. Here are some of the best types of therapy provided by Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs:

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy involves using water to combat physical problems and promote overall health. It can improve blood circulation, take the weight off tired joints, and generally promote relaxation while lowering stress levels. Jacuzzi® Hot Tub jets provide a form of hydrotherapy called hydromassage, where streams of air and water are directed to specific areas of your body. This, combined with the heat of the water and the natural buoyancy attained by floating, provides a unique massage to all parts of your body.

Reflexology

Reflexology homes in on the feet and the hands. According to The Mayo Clinic, “Pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person’s health.” It is believed that pressing on specific areas of the foot may lead to physical improvements in corresponding parts of the body. Jacuzzi® Hot Tub jets, when directed at your hands or areas of your feet, provide reflexology sessions in the comfort of your spa. When the stream from the jets reaches those tender areas, you’ll enjoy a pleasant pressure and a release of tension as you relax.

Chromatherapy

Color can have a distinct effect on mood. In a 1985 study by L.D. Rosenstein, it was reported that test scores and mental state varied depending on what color room the participants were in. Chromatherapy draws on the suggestion that various hues and types of light can relax and soothe you. Replace your spa bulbs with blue or yellow lights, for example, to truly feel relaxed and at peace in your spa.

Now that you are aware of the many therapies your spa can perform, you will be able to utilize it to benefit your health more fully.

Jet Setting: Determining Which Type of Spa Jets are Best for You

Whether you purchase a hot tub to improve your physical and mental health or for relaxation, hydromassage plays a large role in getting to your goal. Dr. Bruce D. Bradley of Loma Linda University’s Department of Physical Therapy explains that “hydromassage jets, properly positioned in a warm bath or spa, can assist in circulation of the extremities.” This is why we extensively research the placement of each specialized jet throughout our hot tubs. Here are our most popular jets to consider when determining which type of spa jets are best for you:

Hydromassage for Your Back

For a jet that delivers a powerful massage that targets discomforts and ailments in your back, consider the following jets:

PowerPro® RX: Rotate the dial on the face of the jet to point it in the direction you want, as well as to adjust the pressure. This jet features a spinning action, and feels like a steady pulse against large portions of your back.

PowerPro® FX Rotational: Air and water move in circles against your back, evoking the sensation of thumbs pressing against those overlooked areas. This jet is similar to the PowerPro® RX, but homes in on smaller muscle groups.

PowerPro® FX Large Rotational: This jet provides a strong massage across a wide group of muscles. The ample reach of this jet ensures steady pressure against larger muscles, not unlike the repeated strong pressure of a Swedish massage.

Hydromassage for Your Legs and Feet

Legs and feet often go unrewarded for their constant hard work. Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs alleviate the aches and pains that may come with being constantly on the go with jets installed all along the bottom of the seat and the hot tub itself, reaching these long-ignored appendages. These jets include:

PowerPro® FX Small: Enjoy a strong hydromassage that focuses on smaller portions of the body, providing a steady stream of vigorous pressure on a particular spot. This is a directional jet, perfect for overworked lower extremities. Use this jet to relieve sore calves, calloused heels, and tender arches.

PowerPro® FX: This jet creates a stream of air and water that also targets smaller muscle groups. Adjust the pressure and allow the jet’s circular motion to swirl pressure against your achy joints.

PowerPro® BX: This “bubbler” jet focuses exclusively on the calves. Pressure bubbles pulse steadily along your legs, refreshing your skin and reinvigorating tired muscles.

Hydromassage for Hard-to-Reach Places

These two jets specifically focus on areas you might forget:

PowerPro® PX: This jet delivers a pulsing massage to small muscle groups, such as the ones in your wrists and hands. Muscles you use frequently while typing at a computer all day are typically ignored in traditional hydrotherapy sessions.

PowerPro® NX2: This jet focuses entirely on the neck, directing a high-pressure stream of water toward the small muscle groups there. This focused jet is also adjustable to help you massage your tension away.

While a number of these jets are available on all Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs, there are a handful that are found only in specific models. Find your local dealer to help you choose the best model for your needs.
