How to Meditate in Your Hot Tub

Almost everyone experiences stress in their daily lives, from driving in traffic to just having too much to do. You can temper the negative effects of stress with the physical benefits of hydrotherapy, and when you combine your regular spa time with meditation, you’ll discover even more stress relief. Read on to discover essential tips for deeper hot tub relaxation.

Set the Mood

The perfect ambiance is important for successful meditation. Attach your spa caddy to safely set up candles; choose aromatherapy candles with calming scents like vanilla, jasmine, or sandalwood for extra tranquillity. You can also plant aromatic herbs like rosemary or lavender around your spa. Remove distraction and aid in concentration by using your BLUEWAVE® Spa Stereo System to play soft music. Classical and instrumental music are popular choices, or consider using nature sounds to take you away to a seashore, forest, or garden. Finally, if your hot tub has an open-air feel to it, you may want to hang sheer fabric for a more private oasis.

Get Comfortable

Comfort is another essential part of meditation. Warm up the water to a pleasant temperature. While there isn’t one set temperature that works for everyone, 90 to 100 degrees is a good guideline, as you’ll stay warm but won’t be overwhelmed by heat. You can also experiment with the fully adjustable Jacuzzi® Hot Tub jets to find the best settings for you. A circulation cycle or low jet power typically work well. Then choose your favorite seat, set any adjustable pillows to the perfect height, and get ready to de-stress.

Focus and Relax

Start with slow deep breathing and concentrate on becoming aware of each sensation you feel. Notice the warm water enveloping you and the gentle sounds of the music or jets. Ensure your mind stays in the present by returning your attention to your breathing whenever you feel a distraction creep in. You’ll notice that you feel peaceful and satisfied in no time. Beginners typically need to practice before they are able to have deep, completely distraction-free meditation sessions. Start with 5 to 10 minute sessions and focus on having a quality session, rather than a long one, then work your way up to 15 minutes or more.

Meditation provides the body an opportunity to rest and restore itself to its normal baseline. When you meditate in your hot tub, all the benefits of hydrotherapy combine with the power of a clear mind to provide you ultimate tranquillity.

The History of Hydromassage

The soothing power of water has been appreciated for thousands of years, from the relaxing heat of geothermal springs to the calming sound of a waterfall or bubbling brook. However, it took an innovative family and a challenging health problem to launch the modern hot tub industry.

Hydromassage Pioneers

The Jacuzzi brothers immigrated to California from Italy in the early 1900s and were inventors from the start. Their passion for creation led to their first success: the first enclosed cabin monoplane, which was used by the U.S. postal service. Next came an ingenious water pump that transformed agriculture. Fortune seemed to be smiling on the family. But in the 1940s, debilitating rheumatoid arthritis struck the 15-month-old son of Candido Jacuzzi. Searching for relief for his small son, he redesigned the agricultural pump to work at home in the bathtub. The concept of an at-home spa was novel and extremely popular. A legendary company was born.

Wonderful Whirlpools

That first pump is now known as the Jacuzzi® J-300™ pump, and it was the beginning of a revolution in water therapy. Demand for the pump continued to grow, and in 1956 the Jacuzzi company was officially formed. However, the portable pump was just the beginning. In 1968, Roy Jacuzzi created the first self-contained hydrotherapy tub, and the whirlpool bath business boomed. Incorporating the first-ever built-in jets, “The Roman” personal whirlpool provided an unparalleled experience of relaxation and massage.

A Cultural Phenomenon

The Jacuzzi family had hit on a big idea, and they pushed it even further. With the inclusion of heating and filtration systems and the creation of larger tubs, the Jacuzzi® Hot Tub as we know it today was created. In the 1970s, the first family-sized tub was introduced, and in the ‘80s the hot tub moved outside alongside the pool and patio, becoming a backyard sensation. However, Jacuzzi never forgot its beginnings changing the health of a child.

Latest Innovations

Today, the Jacuzzi® Brand remains at the forefront of hydromassage as a health and wellness benefit. Exclusive PowerPro® jets are designed to swirl and spiral, bubble and more, along with jets for volume and jets for precision. The ergonomically designed RX Jet Lounge Seat delivers a fully adjustable experience, while the PowerPro® Therapy Seat provides personalized massage from head to toe. As research into the benefits of water massage grows, the Jacuzzi® Brand will continue to develop cutting-edge products.

5 Ways to Keep Your Skin Healthy After Soaks

Soaking in a hot tub is a wonderful, healthy thing to do for your body, especially when you take good care of your skin. Here are a few tips to keep your epidermis fresh and happy while you use your hot tub.

1. Shower Off Afterward

Use warm water and soap to wash away any lingering chlorine or other chemicals. Don’t use hot water, which can strip away some of the natural protection the outer surface of the skin provides and leave you vulnerable to irritants and dryness.

2. Pat Dry, Don’t Rub

Make this a part of your skin care routine when you emerge from your hot tub—be gentle to your skin by patting it dry instead of rubbing, which can pull and irritate. Find towels that are made of a nonabrasive material like bamboo yarn or Egyptian cotton, which are extremely soft, yet durable and absorbent.

3. Moisturize

Apply a lush moisturizer to your skin after showering off, as damp skin is more absorbent and the lotion will lock in the moisture from the shower. Shea butter and cocoa butter are good choices for natural skin care, or choose a lotion enhanced with AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids).

4. Check Your Water Quality

Make sure your chlorine and pH levels are within standards recommended for your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub to ensure your skin is protected. Consider using a spa water conditioner, which can help stabilize the pH, soften the water, and provide extra moisture to leave your skin feeling silky smooth. Some conditioners even deliver a fresh fragrance to turn your hot tub into a true spa experience.

5. Stick to Safe Limits

As an overall rule, don’t soak too long in your spa. Take a break after 20 minutes, and always remember to drink water. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your skin.

With a few simple tips, you can keep your skin feeling fresh and healthy after relaxing in your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub.

Can Hydrotherapy Help Arthritis?

Hot tubs and spas can help you cope with the pain and stiffness caused by arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation recommends warm water therapy, and research confirms its benefits.

What is hydrotherapy? It’s the use of warm water to treat health conditions and ailments, such as arthritis. Hot tubs and spas provide a type of hydrotherapy that is more effective than simply soaking in a warm bath, but not all tubs are created equal. Here are three ways Jacuzzi® hydromassage helps arthritis sufferers:

  1. Patented PowerPro® Jets with full adjustability allow you to change the intensity of the hydromassage for sensitive joints and muscles.
  2. We design low-profile hot tubs and spas – as low as 32- and 34-inches in height—that make it easy to get in and out of, such as the J-425™ Hot Tub and the J-315™ model. You can also add non-slip steps with handrails if you want to more aid getting in and out of your spa.
  3. Our seating is engineered to comfortably support the body in a variety of positions, from full-lounge seats to bench seating that allows you to sit upright. Many uprights seats feature leg and foot jets for targeted hydromassage.

With Jacuzzi® Brand hydrotherapy, three elements—heat, buoyancy and massage—join forces to provide a therapeutic experience. Heat stimulates blood flow to stiff muscles and joints to help reduce inflammation and pain. Buoyancy, which lifts the effects of gravity on the body, takes the pressure off joints and offers support that makes it easier to move. Water massage loosens tightness and helps soothe the discomfort caused by arthritis.

To quote an article in Arthritis Today, the magazine of the Arthritis Foundation, “Research has shown warm water therapy works wonders for all kinds of musculoskeletal complaints, including fibromyalgia, arthritis, and low back pain.” Hydrotherapy can also help you stay active, sleep better and fight depression—important benefits for many of us, including arthritis sufferers.

5 Ways to Use Your Hot Tub With a Workout

Aquatic workouts are a fun, low impact option to increase fitness without straining your body. This is great news for those with joint pain, sports injuries, or anyone who wants to combine therapeutic exercises with the soothing heat and buoyancy of water. What’s more, your home spa can serve double duty as your warm up and post-workout relaxation space. Provided you have permission from your doctor, try out some of the water-based moves below the next time you head for your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub.

Leg and Hip Lifts

Strengthening your legs and hips can help to improve balance, add support to your back muscles, and decrease the risk of injury. Stand up in your spa, using the walls or lip of the hot tub for support, and extend your leg outward and to the side. Loosen up your hips by bringing your knees up one at a time, as close to your chest as you can, then lower and extend them behind you. Repeat each exercise in sets of 3, with 10 to 15 repetitions to start, building in number and frequency as you grow stronger.

Arm Circles and Light Weights

Define and tone your arms by holding them down by your side, then curling upward from the elbow. You can also extend your arms straight outward – one or both at a time, depending on the size of your tub – and work them in circles to build your shoulder and triceps muscles. Do this empty-handed or with light weights. As with the leg lifts, perform these exercises in sets of 3 with 10 to 15 repetitions, until you’re comfortable doing more.

Aerobics

Add an aerobic, cardio-focused component to your hot tub workout with bicycle kicks. Sit in the spa with your legs toward the center, hold the edge of the seat with both hands, and elevate your legs, keeping them in the water. Make a pedaling motion as if you’re riding a bicycle. Pedal for 30 seconds, alternating speeds for a better workout, then take a break and repeat as desired. Get in the rhythm by using your wireless spa stereo system to set the mood with music or your own custom playlist.

Stretch

Warm water loosens up your muscles, making your hot tub the perfect place to stretch pre- or post-workout. After soaking for a few minutes, perform quad and hamstring stretches for your legs, as well as bicep and shoulder stretches for your upper body.

As always, stay hydrated while you’re in the spa—drink lots of water. Make sure to pay attention to your body during your hot tub workout and exit the water if you ever feel light-headed. You can also read more about simple exercises to do in your hot tub.

Can a Hot Tub Can Help Detox Your Body for Summer?

With summer right around the corner, now’s an ideal time to start rebooting your body to get rid of the sluggishness of winter. There is nothing more important than eating healthy and exercising, but your hot tub may also be able to help you “detox” and get ready for sunnier days. Here are some tips to get you started with an at-home detox session in your hot tub:

Before You Get In

Exfoliate.

Before stepping inside your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub, take a bath or shower and scrub your skin with a loofa or coarse washcloth. This exfoliation removes dead skin and helps your pores breathe.

During Your Soak

Heat. Sitting in the warm waters of a hot tub, your core temperature will rise and you’ll begin to sweat. This will flush any toxins from your body through your pores.

Hydrate.

It’s important to drink plenty of water while in a hot tub to replenish your body’s fluids as you sweat.

Stretch. Your muscles will loosen and relax as they heat up, making your spa an ideal place to gently stretch any problem areas.

After You Get Out

Cleanse. By taking a quick, cool shower after each session in your hot tub, you can rinse off any impurities that have worked their way to your skin’s surface in the form of sweat.

Engage in a detox session at the beginning of summer, if not a few times a week year-round, to help your body stay healthy and functioning its best.

The Seven Ailments that Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs Can Alleviate

Hydrotherapy and hydromassage can be used to relieve the symptoms of a multitude of maladies including stress, arthritis, sleeplessness, fibromyalgia, lower-back pain, post-exercise soreness, and leg cramps/restless legs syndrome.

Here’s a closer look at these afflictions and how Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs can alleviate their harmful effects.

  • STRESS

Stress can originate from any number of life’s facets, including money, work, family, and health. And according to a report by the Mayo Clinic, the long-term activation of the stress-response system can disrupt almost all of your body’s natural processes and put you at increased risk for numerous health problems.1 But just 10 minutes in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub each day can dissolve stress and relieve headaches by increasing blood flow and soothing muscles.

  • ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is a condition that stiffens joints and causes pain for roughly 350 million people on the planet. Heated hydrotherapy, however—such as is offered in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub—has been proven to reduce pain levels in those with arthritis by opening blood vessels, increasing range of movement, and promoting muscle growth.2

  • SLEEPLESSNESS

If you suffer from bouts of sleeplessness, some time in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub can send you to snoozeville in no time at all. According to the Better Sleep Council, immersing your body in warm water helps create healthy sleep habits by relieving tension and stimulating circulation.3 Plus, when your body is cooling down after a hot tub session, your brain receives subconscious messages suggesting that you sleep.

  • FIBROMYALGIA

Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects the entire body in myriad ways. The disorder is often associated with sweeping musculoskeletal discomfort, but can also negatively impact the mood, energy level, and sleep habits of those coping with it. The Mayo Clinic notes that warm water is effective in treating fibromyalgia, due to its ability to foster relaxation and mitigate muscle tension.4

  • LOWER-BACK PAIN

In a 2012 survey conducted by the American Physical Therapy Association, nearly two out of every three Americans admitted to dealing with discomfort in their lower backs at one point or another. With so many individuals afflicted by this pain, it’s no wonder that the “Journal of Musculoskeletal Research” stated that hydrotherapy offers more potential benefits for those with lower-back pain, in comparison to land-based forms of exercise.5

  • POST-EXERCISE SORENESS

Spending time in the gym can work wonders for your body, but sore muscles the day following an intense session can make movement difficult. That’s why Dr. James Andrews, former president of the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, recommends hydrotherapy for every athlete based on its ability to increase blood flow, improve sensory impulses, and assuage stiff joints.6

  • LEG CRAMPS/RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME

Though there remains uncertainty as to the cause behind the unpleasant sensation that millions of people experience in their thighs, calves, and feet, one likely factor is that brain misfires signals to sensory nerves in the lower extremities. Relaxing in a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub prior to sleeping can diminish those feelings and while putting your muscles at ease.7

Spending time in your hot tub or bathtub to enjoy hydrotherapy can help ameliorate suffering from these ailments. Consult your physician for the best course of action for your medical condition.
