Hot Tub Covers: Put a Lid On Your Precious Investment

Hot Tub Covers Jacuzzi Silverwood

The backyard of your dreams is nearly complete. You have decided on your perfect spa and have customized it to your liking. Don’t forget to put a lid on it! It is crucial that a hot tub cover accompany your dream spa on its first day home.

Hot tub covers are one of the most important accessories for a hot tub. Here’s why:

Heat Insulation

The cover insulates against heat loss, which occurs when heat rises from the spa water. Preventing heat loss helps the water heat up faster; without a good cover, the homeowner will incur additional costs as more electricity will be needed to heat the water.

Protection

Covers stop leaves, dirt and other debris from falling into the water, which means less cleaning. Covers also protect the top of the spa from damage resulting from extreme weather conditions. The skirt of your hot tub cover should be long enough to prevent the spa’s acrylic edge from being exposed to harmful sunlight and other weather conditions.

Safety

Another very important property is that hot tub covers are large and heavy enough to prevent children, pets, and other animals from accessing the spa when it is not in use.

What to look for when shopping for a hot tub cover:

Solid Reputation

If your hot tub cover comes with a warranty, ensure the company that makes the cover has a solid reputation and long business history. There are plenty of cover manufacturers who will promise a great cover replacement and then go out of business; it is up to you to make sure the company will be around to honor the warranty.

Perfect Fit

A good fit is the most important part of the cover, and accurate measurements are key. It is easiest to buy a cover from the manufacturer of your hot tub, who will have detailed drawings for the spas they manufacture and can ensure the fit is exact.

If you are purchasing a spa cover from a company other than the original manufacturer, you will be asked for various measurements. These will be followed exactly, so if you mistakenly give the wrong information to the cover maker, you will be stuck with a custom-built cover that does not fit. The results can be disastrous in that you will have an ill-fitting cover that does not retain heat, and that you cannot return.

Important facts about Jacuzzi® Hot Tub covers:

Strict Specifications

Jacuzzi has developed strict specifications for its hot tub covers that include specific requirements for: foam density, vapor barrier bag density, vinyl weight, c-channel support, stitching, thread, skirt length, handle material and zipper material, along with a variety of other requirements. These standards ensure you are getting one of the best hot tub covers and cover lifters in the industry, built specifically for your spa.

Customization

Our covers can be customized in many colors, and on select models we offer an optional upgrade to ProEndure cover, which is made with Sunbrella® material for greater durability than vinyl. In addition, our hot tub covers meet the safety requirements of ASTM F-1346-91, the internationally recognized safety standards for pools and spas.

Caring for your hot tub cover:

Hot tub covers need to be cared for just like any outdoor product. Keeping the vinyl cleaned and conditioned will help extend the life of your cover. The main material in the encasement is vinyl, so you should use a high-quality cleaner and conditioner for vinyl that is not petroleum based. Your cover is exposed to air pollutants, acid rain, bird droppings and strong UV rays. Failure to maintain your hot tub cover properly can prematurely age your cover.

Most Attractive Types of Greenery to Surround Your Hot Tub

If you’re seeking to complement your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub with some creative plant life, here are a few suggestions that can position your spa as a centerpiece, while enhancing the overall aesthetic of your yard:

WEEPING BLUE ATLAS CEDAR (Cedrus atlantica)

This slow-growing, drought-tolerant evergreen reaches heights of about 10 feet, and can be trained to “weep” over fences, walls, or arbors. (This evergreen doesn’t shed its needles in fall, which span the spectrum from silvery blue to dark green, so you can enjoy its color year round.) And the striking contours of the moody conifer ensure that it’s an attractive addition to any size yard.

CAST IRON PLANT (Aspidistra elatior)

Native to Taiwan and Japan, this dark, leafy evergreen earned its nickname based on its ability to withstand extremely unfavorable conditions. Not only is it undaunted by the driest of droughts, but it’s equally unfazed by the sultriest summers and wickedest winters. The Cast Iron Plant can grow up to two-feet tall, even under heavy shade, and it’s perfectly fine when neglected for weeks—or even months—on end. They’ll fill in your dark patio corners with pretty lance-shaped leaves.

TOPIARIES

Topiary

Introduce an element of evergreen elegance to your yard with a meticulously trimmed tree. Whether planted in the ground or in a container, topiaries make outstanding embellishments to any garden, and will look wonderful next to your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub. Topiaries come in all shapes and sizes from spirals to pom poms you’re sure to find a shape that fits your garden. Consider Eugenia in warmer environs, Boxwood in cooler climes, and containers of Sky Pencil Holly paired with Japanese Forest Grass as an alternate option for a privacy screen.

ANNUALS

Looking for a pop of seasonal color to add to your hot tub landscape? The options are endless with annuals! Fragrant Freesia offer both color and appealing scent; Ipomoea (sweet potato vine) come in a variety of colors and create a spilling effect in container plantings. And if you’re looking for something different, try ornamental cabbage and kale which provide any planting with both striking color and creative texture.

Apps to Help you Relax and De-stress in your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub or Bathtub

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s more important than ever to let yourself decompress and relax. While your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub or Bathtub is an excellent way to de-stress, you may also look to your smartphone or tablet to further assist in achieving a tranquil state of mind. Here are some must-try apps that will help you fully unwind while enjoying your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub or Bathtub:

Rainy Mood App

This application is available on iTunes and the Android market. In its most basic mode, it produces the sound of a soft, soothing rain shower. Additional options include “impact textures” (such as rain hitting dirt, or a tin roof) and the ability to utilize your music library in the background. Turn on this app, close your eyes, and let your mind wander.

Calm App

This app is designed to guide you through the meditation process, but it’s also excellent at helping you relax or doze off. Listen to guided meditation sessions and set up background sounds to block out the noise of the world around you. The app is also equipped with soothing meditative music and additional content. You can get it on iTunes and for Android phones.

Spa Soundscapes Channel on iHeartRadio

Download the iHeartRadio app to your tablet or smartphone and switch the channel to Spa Soundscapes. This station plays quiet, soothing music that fades easily into the background. It remains an unobtrusive presence during your soak in your hot tub or bathtub. Lean back, close your eyes, and let the music surround you and ease you into complete relaxation. This app is available on iTunes and the Android market.

Audiobooks

There’s nothing better than curling up in bed with a good book…except relaxing in your hot tub or bathtub with a good audiobook. Load the audio version of your favorite book onto your smartphone or tablet and listen to the story unfold. Audiobook narrators are often experienced voice actors and may even bring new nuances to stories you thought you knew by heart.

Sky Map

Before you climb into your hot tub, power up Sky Map on a clear night and hold your phone up to the sky to identify a number of constellations. Once you know where the constellations are, you can put your phone in a safe place and gaze at the star patterns you’ve identified from the warmth of your hot tub. This app is available on iTunes and Android.

Sometimes it can be hard to force yourself to enjoy some downtime. With these apps and your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub or Bathtub, you’ll be able to create the ideal setting for relaxation.

Creative Ideas for Your Winter Hot Tub Party

Winter has arrived, which means long, cold nights. Why not welcome the season—and combat the chill—with a gathering of family and friends? Make your backyard a winter sanctuary by offering food, drink, and of course a soak in your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub. Here are some creative ideas for your winter hot tub party:

Install Lights

In winter, your trees are often bare. This may look bleak during the daytime, but bare branches are far easier to adorn with lights. Hang strings of lights from the branches, running them through separate trees or connecting trees to one another. When the sun goes down, you’ll have a magnificent winter light show.

 Provide Warmth

Keep your guests warm and cozy by providing a basket full of blankets and towels. If you have a towel heater, place the blankets there to warm them up before handing them out. When your party makes its way to the hot tub, keep the towels on the heater or at least in a protected place to ensure you can all wrap up with something comfortable and dry when you step out of the water.

Offer Toasty Drinks

Combat the cold air of a winter evening with a bar full of warm drinks. Keep hot chocolate, tea, and coffee standing by, as well as some stouter beverages. Offer your guests a Spanish hot coffee—made with coffee and Spanish bourbon—or a hot buttered rum.

Make S’mores

You can’t go wrong with s’mores to warm up a winter night. Light the fire pit, cover an outdoor table with a festive cloth, and then set out the ingredients for these cold-weather treats. Remember to use the old standbys of graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows, but you can offer your guests more creative options as well. Provide caramel, more elaborate types of chocolate like dark or white, and fruits like strawberries and bananas. For a salty and sweet combination, offer your guests bacon bits to sprinkle on their s’mores.

There’s a great deal you can do to celebrate the winter season with your friends and family. For a special touch, consider sending out invitations to properly invite your guests to your party. Kori Clark has created the perfect invitation for every Jacuzzi® Hot Tub-themed celebration, making it easy for you to add another touch of creativity and style to your winter celebration.

Essential Accessories for Your Hot Tub

Your spa is going to provide years of enjoyment and potential health benefits, but why not accessorize it and make it more your own? Whether you want to make your hot tub more easily accessible or are looking to craft a more enjoyable experience for you and your guests, the Jacuzzi® Parts Store has something for you. These accessories will add a great deal to your hot tub and the area you set it in.

Steps

Getting in and out of your hot tub shouldn’t be a physical workout. If you’ve had a little trouble climbing into your spa, a set of steps will make getting in and out easier. The steps come in a variety of colors to match your existing décor, and most can be assembled in a minimal amount of time by one person.

Cover Lifter/Mount

One of the best things you can do for your spa is cover it. The cover keeps the heat in as well as prevents debris, insects, and the like from falling into the hot tub. But covers can be heavy and difficult to move; make the process easier on yourself with a cover lifter or mount. Once this equipment is installed, you’ll be able to remove your spa’s cover easily.

Spa All Purpose Cleaner

There’s no getting around it: Your hot tub will accumulate some grime as time goes on. Make a quick cleaning part of your periodic maintenance session. Just spray this cleaner onto the exterior and wipe away stains and buildup with a cloth. You can also use this on the interior of your hot tub when the water is drained.

Cover Cleaner

You keep your spa sparkling clean, so give your cover the same treatment. Spray this onto your cover every five or six weeks and buff it in with a paper towel – be careful not to get it on your hands, as it may irritate your skin. The cleaner will keep your spa cover looking as lustrous and clean as your spa itself, and will also protect against UV ray-induced fading.

Towel Warmer

There’s nothing quite like soaking in your hot tub to ward off the chill of a winter night. But what happens when you step out of your spa and into the evening air? Place your towels into a towel warmer before getting into your spa; when you climb out, you’ll have a toasty towel to wrap yourself in.

Your hot tub is not a static item, sitting unchangeable in your backyard. It’s part of your home, so outfit it according to your own needs and tastes as they change. Proper care will ensure its longevity.

3 Entertaining Games to Play in Your Hot Tub

You already know how relaxing your spa is, but you might not realize just how much enjoyable it can be too. Unlike pools, most people don’t associate hot tubs with games even though there are quite a few you can play. Here are three games to try out with your friends and family this weekend:

Musical Jets

Musical jets is just like musical chairs with the added twist of involving your hot tub. Start by shutting down a portion of the jets in your spa. Have someone play a song (for example via the Bluetooth enabled Jacuzzi® Hot Tub) while everyone in the spa moves around in a clockwise motion. Just like musical chairs, when that person stops the music, everyone has to stop where they’re at. Unlike musical chairs however, where you’re scattering to find a chair, in musical jets you’re trying to sit down in front of a jet. If there isn’t a jet blowing up against you when you freeze, you’re out and have to leave the hot tub while everyone else finishes the game.

The Mine Game

Turn off the jets in your hot tub and drop in five to 10 ping pong balls, rubber ducks, or some other type of small, floating toys. The objective of the game is not to touch the floating objects; you can scramble out of the way as much as you can, but your feet must remain in the tub.

If you come into contact with an object, you have to leave the tub and place two more objects inside. After a few minutes, whoever has survived the onslaught of small toys is the victor.

Hot Tub Hockey

Using a ping pong ball or something else that floats, hot tub hockey involves trying to move this object to your opponent’s side of the spa without using your hands. Start off by placing the ping pong ball in the middle of the tub, between you (your team) and your opponent. Each time your team manages to move the ball to the opposing team’s wall, you earn a point. Splashing is allowed and can be a great way to heat up the competition! The team that scores three points first is the winner.

Most Popular Backyard Additions to Complement Your Hot Tub

As a hot tub owner, your backyard is probably already your go-to relaxation spot. But what if you want to take it further than just soaking in your spa? Here are four outdoor additions to complement your hot tub and backyard:

Add More Water
Create your own oasis by installing a waterfall. Used in places known for serenity, like massage therapy rooms, the sound of a waterfall is synonymous with relaxation. Ponds, which can include waterfalls, koi fish, or other additions, can also make your backyard more attractive and inviting.

Incorporate Fire

Similar to a bonfire on the beach, a fire pit can give your backyard a sense of nostalgia that can be very soothing after a long day. Whether you build a permanent outdoor fireplace or purchase a portable version, make sure to check your local ordinances before you invest as some cities limit the size and use of fire pits. Tiki torches are also a nice way to give your backyard that resort feel, as well as helping keep the bugs away.

Create a Yoga or Relaxation Area
Similar to the way your hot tub provides a variety of hydrotherapy benefits for your entire back, yoga is a great way to relax and relieve your spine of the compression it endures each day. Create a dedicated outdoor space for yoga, meditation, and other relaxation methods to give you and your family members a place to unwind each day.

Build an Outdoor Bar
Whether you’re enjoying a glass of wine with your partner or entertaining friends, an outdoor bar can make your backyard a more welcoming environment. Rather than disrupting conversation to trek back and forth from the kitchen, this outdoor addition provides that added convenience of having a fully stocked bar and glassware on hand, making entertaining more enjoyable and less stressful.

Signs it’s Time to Drain and Refill

When it comes to draining and refilling your hot tub, it’s a bit of a Goldilocks situation. Draining your spa too often is a waste of valuable water, while not draining it enough could create health problems for you. Therefore, it’s all about finding when is “just right” for your hot tub. Follow our simple guidelines for knowing when it’s a good time to drain and refill your spa.

Do the Math

One way to determine if your hot tub needs a good rinse and drain is to pull out the calculator. Divide the number of gallons of spa water by the number of bathers who usually use the tub. Then divide that number by three to figure out how often you should go through the process.

For example, if your spa holds 200 gallons and you have four bathers each day, that’s 200 divided by four, which equals 50. Divide 50 by three, and you should drain your spa every 16 days or so.

Check for Foam and Funk

If your spa is running especially foamy and the antifoam you add isn’t doing the trick, this a sure sign it’s time to change out the water. The same goes for funky looking or discolored water too.

Take a Whiff

Another easy way of determining when your tub needs to drain is if the water begins to smelly funny. Any out-of-the-ordinary smell is a cry for fresh water.

Check the Calendar

If your tub has been sitting empty for a while, this is another time when it’s a good idea to refill, rinse, and drain. Filling and then draining your tub will help clear the plumbing lines and rid it of buildup.

Make Goldilocks proud and find the spa cleaning routine that is just right for you and your tub. Keeping in mind how often you use your tub and watching out for these warning signs are good indicators as to when your spa needs a refill and rinse.

Is Your Hot Tub Irritating Your Skin?

If you start developing a rash after soaking in your spa, the experience can quickly go from hot tub party to hot mess. A red, itchy, bumpy rash on your skin after a dip is a reaction a small number of people have to hot tubs. In some cases, your rash could be an infection from the germ pseudomonas aeruginosa, but in other cases it could be an allergic reaction to certain chemicals.
