Buying a Hot Tub

Good Value vs. Cheaply Made Hot Tub

How to Tell the Difference

Affordable doesn’t necessarily mean cheap, and you don’t need to break the bank to get a quality hot tub. Here are some questions to ask to find the perfect balance between quality and affordability when shopping for the a great hot tub for your family:

Is it a brand name you trust?

A hot tub is a major purchase for most people. Just as consumers rely on the reputations of well-known automobile manufacturers and appliance makers, it’s smart to consider the brand name on a hot tub. A “cheaply made” hot tub from an unreliable brand can cost you more over the life of the hot tub than a model from a reputable manufacturer such as the Jacuzzi® Brand.

Does the hot tub have the features you need?

To determine good value versus a cheaply made tube, weigh the long- and short-term benefits of your needs versus available options and compare them to the costs of each model. Are you looking for a warm oasis to relax with your family? Then a large hot tub may be a better value to you. Or do you have a physical issue that needs some targeted hydrotherapy? Placement of the jets is more important than the quantity of jets. In an area where temperatures tend to top records? A hot tub with durable cabinetry could be your best investment. Be wary of buying a lower cost hot tub at the expense of the features you find most important otherwise you may not get the full value of your purchase.

Does the hot tub have a good warranty?

Hot tubs that are truly “cheap” often lack a comprehensive warranty. Hot tub manufacturers using low-quality materials and methods sometimes won’t offer the assurance of replacement parts and service.

If you’re thinking of buying a no-warranty hot tub, buyer beware. Cheaply made hot tubs can become expensive if they aren’t protected by a solid warranty. Jacuzzi offers comprehensive warranties for up to 10 years on its hot tubs, with a worldwide network of authorized dealers available to back up the warranty provisions.

3 Big Trends This Year in the Hot Tub Industry

From daring designs to integrations with the latest smartphones, the hot tub industry continues to innovate. Here are a few new hot tub trends that are picking up steam in 2015.

Greater Emphasis on Design

J-500 installation

As the jets and pumps in today’s top hot tubs continue to grow more precise and powerful, exteriors are also evolving with a finer focus on sleek styles and cutting-edge design elements. This trend is best exemplified in the Jacuzzi® J-500™ and J-LX™ Collections, each of which draw inspiration from the finest modern furniture and appliances available. Suitable enough to be situated as the centerpiece of your backyard or outdoor area, contemporary hot tubs can also complement your home’s curb appeal with warm shades of wood and other attractive skirting options.

The Rise of Swim Spas

Serving as a singular solution for those who wish to work out in the water while also reaping the many benefits of hydrotherapy, swim spas are enjoying a recent rise in popularity. The versatility of these aquatic exercise stations allow them to be installed either above or below ground, without requiring the permits normally necessary for full-size pools. Swim spas offer an abundance of exercise options, including swimming, rowing, and jogging among many others. Plus, the resistance provided by water is twice as effective as weights, while also being gentler on joints.

Technological Enhancements

J-500_ControlPanel_0421_v2Rend_479x720_72_CMYK

Electronics and the Internet continue to influence nearly every aspect modern life, and hot tubs are no exception. This is especially true in the Jacuzzi® J-500™ Collection, which, aside from featuring the industry’s first full-color glass control panel, also offers an accompanying mobile app. The Jacuzzi® ProTouch™ Control Panel employs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® technologies to pair with the ProLink™ app (available Spring 2015), putting the pinnacle of performance in your pocket. With the ProLink™ app, users can remotely operate and monitor their hot tubs, and even receive maintenance notifications to assist in the upkeep of your investment.

With everything from visionary designs to advanced electronics, the hot tub industry is keeping pace with the most advanced markets, and the products are becoming lifestyle essentials. Contact your local Jacuzzi® Dealership to wet test one of the latest models today.

In-Ground vs. Portable Hot Tubs

Though it’s far less of an undertaking than installing a pool, preparing for a backyard hot tub still deserves serious consideration. After deciding to welcome a hot tub into your world, one of the first decisions you’ll be confronted with is whether to go with a built-in or portable hot tub. Each style has its own appeal and advantages. Here is a quick summary of the benefits of each:

Versatility

Portable hot tubs are designed to fit well in a variety of settings, from your patio or yard to an indoor space. They can also be sunk into ground, built into a deck, or remain above ground. And, when it comes to equipment, it’s built directly into the portable spa and doesn’t need a separate location in your yard.

In-ground hot tubs are very versatile because you can choose the shape and size. They can be added as a dramatic landscape effect, or as a hidden retreat that seamlessly blends in with your yard. Just keep in mind you’ll need an extra spot for equipment.

Advanced Hydrotherapy

Portable hot tubs often offer highly-specialized and specifically-placed jets, ergonomic seating options to accommodate individuals of various heights, and lounge seating options. Overall, it’s easier to target specific body parts for hydrotherapy with portable hot tubs.

In-ground hot tubs use basic, standard jets that are typically single sized. You can choose the placement of the jets, but the types of massage produced by the jets aren’t as varied as with portable spas.

Ease of Maintenance

Advancements in portable hot tub filtration make it easy to maintain and care for water. Covers are also frequently included for purchasers of portable hot tubs, helping to keep the water cleaner longer, as well as maintain the water temperature when not in use. The acrylic shells of portable hot tubs are more comfortable (gentler on skin and swimsuits) than the materials used for in-ground spas and easier to clean. Portable spas also have a quick-drain feature and overall come equipped with long warranties.

In-ground hot tubs require the same amount of maintenance as portables in regard to balancing the water chemicals, but can be more difficult to clean. One perk is that if your in-ground hot tub is connected to an in-ground pool, you do not have to drain it. This could potentially reduce maintenance (although you are adding the maintenance of a pool!).

We hope this article has helped explain the differences of in-ground and portable hot tubs, so you can easily decide which type is best for your family. If you’d like to check out your options for portable hot tubs in person, click here to find the Jacuzzi dealership near you.

Jacuzzi Dealer Q&A: Jay Gavin, Aqua Paradise

In tandem with our Jacuzzi Expert blog series, we’re also interviewing Jacuzzi® Dealers to get their perspective on the company’s products and customers. As a current or potential customer, these conversations will hopefully help you get to know the dealers, as well as give you practical information from the “people on the ground.”

For the first installment, we interviewed Jay Gavin from Aqua Paradise, a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub dealer with two locations in San Diego, Calif.

Q: What are the most popular questions customers ask at your dealership?

Jay Gavin (JG): The first thing customers want to know is “How much?” More than ever, people are shopping with their wallets rather than their wishes. Maintenance is also a major topic of discussion: How do I take care of the spa? Do you have salt? Do I have to use chlorine? How often do I drain it? How is the electrical set up? These all make sense to ask, and we’re happy to provide answers.

Q: What brings customers into your dealership?
(JG):
Many people are looking for something fun to add to their backyard—something the whole family will enjoy. Also, we get a lot of customers looking to alleviate pain and discomfort in specific body parts. Whether it’s a neck injury or knee surgery, they want a way to feel better at home. And whenever we have a new model, we get customers coming in to check it out. For example, the J-500™ Collection and the J-LX® Collection are new and exciting, and they bring people in the door who are curious about them.

Q: What are the primary challenges that consumers face when deciding which Jacuzzi® Hot Tub to purchase?

(JG): Direction is a biggest challenge. You don’t always know where to start. The website helps, even if people don’t know the price. We usually start with size and budget, and then discuss seating arrangement to help you narrow down their options.

Q: What distinguishes your dealership from local competition?

(JG): At our dealership, the focus is not on selling, but on relationship building. We treat you the same as we treat our friends. We want to make sure you’re having fun and communicating with us. The Jacuzzi® Brand is also a big thing that sets us apart. The jetting story is one of the most important factors, as is the size of the manufacturer and their ability to support their dealers.

Q: What trends did you notice in 2014? Do you have any predictions for 2015?

(JG): We continue to hear a lot about swim spas, and I think we will continue to see more and more interest in the patio-sized spa. I also think more and more dealers will start turning to e-commerce.

Overall, it seems like more people than ever buy for the benefits of hydrotherapy and less for entertainment. That said, there is a trend of more people wanting style from their hot tubs. They want it to blend into their backyard.

Q: Regarding hot tub installation, is there anything that you hand out or recommend?

(JG): We don’t just hand out an electrical schematic, but we give you an actual picture of what the electrical connections should look like when complete in case your electrician needs a reference. We also remind you about service access. It’s amazing how many people decide down the road to build something around their spa, and don’t leave access for service.

Q: Step by step, what can a customer expect when they arrive at your dealership?

(JG): First we’ll learn about how a customer plans to use their hot tub and have them sit in a few models to find the perfect fit.

Next up is a discussion about budget. Once we have a general idea about their price range, we should have two spas to talk about.

Then we’ll make sure that you know what needs to be done as far as electrical access is concerned. We’ll also schedule a pre-installation inspection and provide electrical, concrete, landscaping, or deck referrals as needed.

On delivery day your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub will be delivered and a technician will conduct the setup, which consists of installing the cover lifter, filling the spa, and making sure all of the settings are properly programmed. Lastly, we do an orientation on water care and spa controls to make sure you are comfortable with your new Jacuzzi® Hot Tub. You can contact us if you ever have any questions about water care, hot tub maintenance or more; our relationship with our customers last long after your hot tub is delivered.

What Happens at a Wet Test?

There are many benefits that come from visiting a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub dealership. Among the most important steps you can take upon arrival, is getting into the hot tubs themselves. By stepping into a hot tub—whether it’s wet or dry—you’re more likely to find the model that best fits your needs.

If you have the opportunity to wet test a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub, here are some tips.

To get the most out of the experience, it’s recommended that you bring the following items with you: a swimsuit, a towel or robe, a plastic bag to put your wet swimsuit in afterwards, and flip flops or slippers if you plan to get changed in the bathroom.

Before you arrive at the dealership, take a few moments to write down any questions that come to mind. It’s recommended that you do this, because after you experience the warm water and pulsating jets of a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub, you’ll likely come up with new questions, while initial ones might slip your mind.

Once you get to the dealership, a representative will escort you to the wet-test area. Many dealers provide “wet-test rooms” to give guests greater privacy, or they offer to stay afterhours to ensure you receive the seclusion you desire. Most dealerships even invite you to bring your whole family to test out each of the different hot tub models.

Be sure to try out a variety of models and seats. Here are a few popular seats and the models in which you can experience them:

  • The ProAir™ Lounge Seat—Targeting muscle knots and tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, this lounge seat also eases tightness in the legs and lower back. Exclusively available in our J-300™ Collection
  • The FX-12 Therapy Seat—Designed to provide an advanced deep-tissue massage, this versatile seat employs adjustable spiral-action jets that provide a high-class hydromassage with full coverage of the back and neck. Exclusively available in our J-300™, J-400™ and J-500™ Collections
  • The MX2 Jet Therapy Seat—This curved seat cradles your body in the perfect position for an exceptional deep-tissue massage that concentrates on the larger lower-back muscle groups. Exclusively available in our J-LX®, J-400™, and J-500™ Collections
  • The RX Jet Therapy Seat—The pinnacle of performance, this top-tier seat provides a luxurious Swedish-style hydromassage that you control. Exclusively available in our J-LX® and J-400™ Collections, and in an upgraded version in our J-500™ Collection

Hot Tub Pre-Installation Checklist

Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs are easily installed, but there are a number of things that you should expect prior to the arrival of your new relaxation station. Here are some things a reputable hot tub dealer will help you figure out before your spa arrives:

Does your city or county have any requirements, like a gate, fence, or steps that you need when you have a hot tub on your property?

Some cities have municipal codes in place to protect children, such as obligating owners to install gates, fencing, or other such barriers to deny access to unsupervised children. Your local Jacuzzi® Hot Tub dealer will have that information ready for you and help guide you through the installation process.

How much room do installers need to get your hot tub into your yard?

Installation of your new hot tub requires a completely unobstructed route to ensure that the unit does not incur any damage along the way. Double check all gates and entranceways to ensure sufficient clearance. Determine ahead of time the route that the installer should take when your Jacuzzi® Hot Tub arrives. Keep an eye out for objects that might hinder the delivery team in any way, and remove those obstacles in advance of the installer’s arrival. Also inspect your yard for any overhanging branches, rain gutters, or protruding electrical meters that might impede the installation process. Are there more than 6 consecutive stairs without a landing in your delivery route? If so, you must consult your Jacuzzi dealer prior to delivery to make adequate preparations.

Indoor or outdoor? On a deck or on the ground?  Grass or gravel underneath? Does the location you’ve chosen make sense?

Due to the heft of the hot tub, water, and happy bathers inside, it’s of the utmost import that the foundation upon which your unit sits is completely level and capable of equally distributing the weight that rests upon it. Your hot tub dealer will help you decide which type of foundation is best for you.

What are the electrical requirements?

Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs that are installed in the United States must meet the wiring specifications established by the National Electric Code (NEC) as well as any other state or local codes. Any circuitry must be installed by a professional electrician and receive approval an appropriate inspection official.

Owning a Jacuzzi® Hot Tub can instantly increase your quality of life by providing a relaxing hydromassage and a variety of other health benefits. Before your hot tub arrives, check out this video to see how you’re the installation may go. And if you’re interested in learning even more, take a look at this detailed Pre-Delivery Guide to get you ready for the big day.
